Late-Night Eats: Healthy Style

Many people step on their college campuses with the fear of the “freshman 15” weighing on their shoulders. Recently, I visited a friend at Penn State University and she taught me how to do late-night eats the right way. Keep reading to find out the inside scoop on how to eat yummy food while also avoiding those dreaded 15 pounds.

Lettuce Wraps

Jimmy John’s on Marshall Street is open until 3 a.m., which makes it the perfect post-DJ’s go-to stop. These wraps are especially great for people who are gluten-free or vegetarian or anyone who is trying to stay healthy. There are so many different ways to customize your lettuce wrap, whether you add a few more veggies or some cold cuts.

Whole Wheat Pita

Pita Pit on Marshall Street is also open until 3 a.m., making it another great place to stop by to solve those late-night cravings. Pita Pit offers a whole wheat pita option which makes it a healthy snack option. You can add veggies and grilled chicken to top it off, adding some protein to your pita!

Calzones

While most of us instantly visualize cheesy, meat-filled calzones when we think of Calios, there are healthy options to munch on as well! Calios offers a vegan order that includes green peppers, mushrooms, onions, broccoli and tomatoes. Calios is also open until 4 a.m., which makes it an extra great place to get some late-night (or early morning) eats!

Whole Wheat Wraps

If you’re looking to save some money while eating healthy, Kimmel Food Court is open until 1 a.m. on weeknights and 3 a.m. on weekends. Kimmel has a deli counter where students can purchase healthy whole wheat wraps as a late-night snack. Veggies and cold cuts could be added to the wrap to spice it up!

Salads

Acropolis Pizza House is open until 1:30 a.m. on weekends. They are best known for their mozzarella sticks and pizza, but Acropolis also offers six yummy salad options for those of us that are trying to stay healthy: tossed salad, Greek salad, antipasto salad, tuna salad, julienne salad and seafood salad. This is a great healthy alternative for late-night eats!
