If she’s being honest, senior Courtnee Futch will tell you she started her business ThunderCakes partly because of her passion for baking, but mostly because she was a broke college freshman. Three years later, ThunderCakes is a successful bakery run by Courtnee and a staff of about five other students.

Futch, from Atlanta, Georgia, started ThunderCakes out of her freshman dorm room in Boland in 2012. Coming from a food-oriented family, she has always loved baking and was on her high school’s culinary team. She now runs her own baking business off campus, selling just about anything, from cookies to brownies, cheesecake to cinnamon rolls. Although the business is run off campus, its main customers are students and recently, Courtnee says, parents who are sending baked goods to their kids for holidays, birthdays, and other occasions.

This fall, ThunderCakes will be launching a new initiative called The Thunderous 5. Whereas most ThunderCakes orders need to be placed ahead of time, items on The Thunderous 5 menu can be ordered and delivered on the same day. Five limited edition items will be on the menu and, if ordered before 2 p.m., will be delivered on the same day no later than 7 p.m.

Chai Tea Cupcake ($27)

Fluffy vanilla cupcakes infused with spiced chai tea, frosted with lightly salted caramel buttercream, topped with a vanilla chai reduction, and sprinkled with cinnamon cayenne sugar.

The Gold Ganache Cake ($22)

Three layers of ThunderCakes Signature Chocolate Cake recipe, frosted with fluffy milk chocolate buttercream, topped with semi-sweet chocolate ganache, and dusted with edible gold sugar.

Chocolate Pecan Turtle Cookies ($24)

Chewy chocolate cookies wrapped in toasted chopped pecans, filled with homemade caramel, and drizzled with melted chocolate.

“Georgia, Honey” Cupcakes ($30)

A honeyed-vanilla cupcake filled with bourbon peach compote and frosted with a fluffy white chocolate buttercream.

Maple Bacon Cinnamon Roll ($25)

Fluffy, sweet and spiced cinnamon rolls made even better when filled with salty, crispy bacon and topped with a maple glaze.
