What is the Mediterranean diet?

The Mediterranean Diet has taken over food media in the past few years. It is promoted as a “miracle diet” that has endless health benefits. For chronic conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, one of the main recommendations is to eat healthy and the Mediterranean Diet is often recommended. But, what exactly is the “Mediterranean Diet”? 

First of all, the Mediterranean Diet is not really a “diet,” as this word implies a strict weight loss regime; it is more so a meal pattern. The Mediterranean Diet focuses on the flavors and ingredients from the Mediterranean region, namely Italy, Greece, Spain, Lebanon, Morocco, and Egypt. It not only focuses on the ingredients, but also many cultural components of the region. 

Research in the field of nutrition has highlighted the benefits of the Mediterranean Diet. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, following the Mediterranean Diet is associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease and related mortality. In addition, research suggests that this diet is associated with healthier aging and better cognitive function later in life.

The Mediterranean diet is primarily plant-based. It focuses on a daily intake of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, olive oil, beans, legumes, herbs, and spices. Animal products are consumed in smaller amounts. The main meat sources are fish and other seafood. In addition to this, the Mediterranean Diet highlights physical activity, stress management, and the social benefits of eating with others; all of which can contribute to better overall health.
