3 Classic Microwave Meals, Updated

If you live in a dorm, options for food are scarce. There’s the dining hall: a façade of seemingly unlimited options that all start to taste the same after two weeks. You can order online, but unless you’re the next Mark Zuckerberg or had a summer internship with Google, using GrubHub every night will drain your bank account faster than your GPA is falling. Finally there’s your microwave, your gateway to the culinary arts. Here are three (really easy) ways to step up your microwave game.

ramen

Ramen Noodles = Spice Cup of Noodles

If you’re between the ages of 18 and 23 and spend a colossal amount of money on textbooks every semester, ramen noodles are probably a staple in your diet.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pack of Maruchan Ramen Noodles
  • 1 Tbsp. Sriracha
  • 2 Tbsp. soy sauce
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped
  • Fresh scallions, chopped
  • 1 Tbsp. garlic powder

Directions:

  1. Throw out Maruchan flavor packet.
  2. Prepare ramen noodles according to directions (don’t drain water).
  3. Add Sriracha, soy sauce, and garlic powder to noodles create broth.
  4. Generously garnish with fresh cilantro and scallions and serve immediately.

Microwave Popcorn = Parmesan Garlic Popcorn

Microwave popcorn is a timeless snack, but it can be a little bland by itself. Just don’t set off the fire alarm.

Ingredients:

  • 1 bag of your favorite microwave popcorn
  • ¼ cup parmesan cheese, shredded
  • 2 Tbsp. garlic seasoning
  • 1 Tbsp. basil flakes
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 Tbsp. butter, melted

Directions:

  1. Prepare microwave popcorn according to instructions.
  2. Once popcorn is popped, add parmesan cheese, garlic seasoning, basil flakes, salt, and butter to bag.
  3. Close popcorn bag and shake, pick out a movie to watch, and serve immediately.

fancy-mac

Easy Mac = Fancy Mac

Personally, Easy Mac is my favorite microwave meal. While it can stand on its own, adding a few extra ingredients changes the game.

Ingredients:

  • 1 bowl of Easy Mac
  • ½ cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 Tbsp. basil flakes
  • Ground pepper
  • Optional: ½ Tbsp. truffle oil

Directions:

  1. Prepare Easy Mac according to instructions.
  2. Garnish with cheddar cheese, basil flakes, and ground pepper. Add truffle oil, if using.
  3. Let cool and serve immediately.
