Looking to get away from college life for a night and explore the restaurants in Syracuse’s neighboring towns? You should definitely consider The Brewster Inn, a Top 40 Distinguished Restaurant of North America and a receiver of Wine Spectator’s “Best Award of Excellence” wine cellar ranking. Attached to an inn located in Cazenovia, the restaurant is about a 30 minute drive from Syracuse University’s campus. You can either dine in one of three candlelit dining rooms or on the heated outdoor patio that is accompanied by The Terrace Bar, all of which embody an elegantly rustic aesthetic. The Brewster Inn overlooks Cazenovia lake, offering a charming view along with equally charming service and food. All of the menu items use fresh locally sourced ingredients to create flavorful and innovative combinations. There is an extensive selection of both food and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), many of which align with seasonal flavors.
I was fortunate to dine at The Brewster Inn with my parents for parents’ weekend, and the food was just as delicious as it appears on the website. I began by ordering the Maple Manhattan, a maple flavored mocktail that was perfect for the fall weather. For appetizers, we shared the Focaccia Bread, Thai Calamari, Sweet Potato Pot Stickers, and Roasted Beet & Black Truffle Burrata Salad. Each plate was cleaned quickly. I ordered the Grilled Pumpkin Swordfish as my main course, and to say it was outstanding would be an understatement. The Brewster Inn is able to strategically pair ingredients you would not expect to mesh well and somehow prepare them together perfectly. Finally, I enjoyed the Bananas Foster for dessert as recommended by our waitress, which was as great as expected.
If you are looking for a more upscale dining experience away from campus, The Brewster Inn should certainly be on your list. The ambiance is simultaneously sophisticated and welcoming, ideal for a getaway from the more upbeat nature of college life. Join your friends or bring your family to sit on the outdoor patio before the cold weather takes over, and enjoy a lovely meal as the sun sets on Cazenovia Lake.
